5 Famous People who Came from Ghana

Ghana has enjoyed a rich heritage ever since its founding days.  But did you know that many world famous people have also come from Ghana?  To prove it, we have gathered just five of them with accomplishments in everything from sports to the arts to Nobel winners.

  1. Kofi Annan – is a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the UN from 1 January 1997 to 31 December 2006. Annan and the United Nations were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for his founding of the Global AIDS and Health Fund to support developing countries in their struggle to care for their people.  He was born in Kumasi, Ghana in 1938 to a tribal chief of the Fante people.  After studying at the local university, he was given a Ford Foundation grant which allowed him to study in the United States and then Switzerland.  He then work for the World Health Organization and…

Decent Work and Dignity for Domestic Workers

On Oscar night this year, Octavia Spencer won the statuette for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal in The Help of Minny, an outspoken maid in 1960’s Mississippi. She had earlier won the Golden Globe and in her acceptance speech, Spencer, whose mother reportedly worked as a maid, said the film highlighted the situation of domestic workers then and now, and quoted Martin Luther King to say that: “All work that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance.” 

Yet, the work and life experiences of Minny and Aibileen and the other women featured in The Help could have been plucked from anywhere in the world today.

At the very least, millions of domestic workers get paid below the minimum wage, and rarely benefit from health insurance, paid leave, or even time off. Take one sick day, and you’re likely to be fired, with no unemployment benefits to speak of. In some parts of the world, domestic workers face physical and sexual abuse, seclusion,…
