Umrah is a holy Ibadah for Muslims. Every year, tens of millions of pilgrims travel to the holy city of Makkah in order to offer the rituals of the minor pilgrimage. Though Umrah is a Sunnah of Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) and not an obligatory pilgrimage, the rewards which it holds for the believers are unbelievable. Considering the ever-increasing number of pilgrims, Umrah visas are issued all around the year except the days of Hajj. Here’s everything you need to know about the validity of an Umrah Visa.

When can you apply for an Umrah visa?

Umrah visas are issued twelve months of the year. However, the days of Hajj i.e. 8th to 13th of Dhul-Hijjah are excluded. Therefore, one can apply for an Umrah visa whenever he/she desires.

Documents required:

  • A duly signed and properly filled umrah visa application form.
  • Multiple copies of your colored passport sized photographs.
  • Passport with at least 6-month validity (when applying for umrah visa).
  • Confirmed flight and accommodation information (to be attached to the visa application form).
  • Vaccination Certificate(s) depending on the region you are traveling from.

The necessity of a Mahram for women:

Previously, it wasn’t possible for women to travel alone for Umrah. They need to have a male mahram along, throughout their umrah travel trip. Otherwise, their entry to the kingdom might be banned.

However, in late 2019, Saudi Arabia introduced its Saudi Vision 2030 plan. As a result, many amendments were made to the country policies in regard to business, education, tourism, and even in the hajj and umrah ministry. As per the new rules, women can now travel alone for umrah i.e. company of a male mahram isn’t legally required.

Issuance of the Umrah Visas:

Umrah visas are issued with a validity of 30 days. However, the permitted stay period is of 15 days maximum. The additional 15 days are given in order to compensate for any flight or travel delays. In other words, one has to depart from the kingdom on the 15th day from its date of arrival in Saudia Arabia.

Umrah on Tourist visa:

Under the new policies of the Saudi Vision 2030 plan, Muslims can now also perform Umrah on their tourist visas i.e. it's permissible.

In Ramadan:

People traveling for Umrah in Ramadan cannot stay any longer than the last day of Ramadan. In other words, pilgrims should leave Saudi Arabia by the end of Ramadan and cannot celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr there.

How to obtain an Umrah visa?

Umrah visas, as part of the Saudi Vision 2030 plan, are now offered on both visa-on-arrival and e-services. Visa-on-arrival is available through a 15-minute procedure while through e-services one can have an umrah visa issued immediately.
